temperatures of hundreds of thousands or millions of degrees Kelvin (thermal radiation) or by electrons spiraling in strong magnetic fields at speeds near that of light (synchrotron radiation). The distribution of points reflects where particular objects are likely to be found in relation to the Milky Way. The supernova remnants (blue) are located almost exclusively in the galactic plane, since this is where almost all recent star formation and supernova explosions have taken place. Because x-ray sources outside our galaxy have no relation to the Milky Way, they are spread more or less randomly throughout the chart.
